Getting the Fit Right for the Whole Family
How to measure, when to size up for growing feet, and why sizes vary from brand to brand.
Shopping for the whole family means juggling a lot of sizes — and kids' feet that never seem to stop growing. A little preparation goes a long way towards getting the right fit first time.
Measure at the end of the day, when feet are at their largest. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark the back of the heel and the tip of the longest toe, and measure the distance between them. Do both feet: it's normal for one to be slightly bigger, and you should always fit the larger one.
Sizes are a starting point, not a promise. Measure first, then check the guide for the brand you're buying.
For kids, leave a little room to grow — around a thumb's width at the toe is a sensible guide — but resist sizing up too far. Shoes that are too big can rub, slip and make it harder to move naturally. Check their size every few months, as growth spurts can arrive quickly.
Expect sizes to vary between brands and even between models from the same brand. EU, UK and US conversions aren't identical everywhere, so always check the size guide on the product page rather than relying on the size you usually wear.
Apparel works the same way. Compare your measurements against the brand's size chart, and look at how a piece is meant to fit — slim, regular or relaxed — before you choose.
